Why are these speakers so reasonably priced?

These speakers were taken from a vintage organ speaker array. They are essentially used but still highly functional speakers. They may show slight signs of wear around the gasket. These speakers are the exact same specs as others on the market except a fraction of the cost, and are guaranteed to work great!

  • Large ceramic magnets

  • Original paper cones

  • 8 Ω impedance

  • 6 inches by 9 inches

Will these work in your Wurlitzer?

Wurlitzer amplifiers that specifically spec an 8 Ω internal speaker include: 140B, 140A, 720B (some 720B use a 12” round speaker). Other models of Wurlitzer come stock with a 4 Ω internal speaker, but — as we explain in the next section — there are circumstances where you may want to replace it with 8 Ω.

Can I use an 8Ω speaker with a Wurlitzer amp that calls for 4Ω?

You can, and under certain circumstances you may want to swap your 4 Ω for an 8 Ω speaker. If you are the kind of player that frequently uses the external speaker out on your Wurlitzer, using an 8 Ω internal speaker will allow you to safely use a wider variety of external speaker cabinets. Because the external and internal speaker jacks are wired in parallel, the total impedance is always a number smaller than that of the lowest-impedance speaker. Here are some common combinations:

  • 4 Ω internal speaker and 4 Ω extension speaker: 2 Ω

  • 4 Ω internal speaker and 8 Ω extension speaker: 2.7 Ω

  • 4 Ω internal speaker and 16 Ω extension speaker: 3.1 Ω

  • 8 Ω internal speaker and 4 Ω extension speaker: 2.7 Ω

  • 8 Ω internal speaker and 8 Ω extension speaker: 4 Ω

  • 8 Ω internal speaker and 16 Ω extension speaker: 5.33 Ω

Wurlitzer tube amplifiers want to see a speaker impedance in the neighborhood of 4 Ω. The lower the speaker impedance, the more current flows. This increased flow of current can stress the vintage components in your amplifier. Using an 8 Ω internal speaker will allow you to connect a greater variety of extension speakers to your Wurlitzer, while keeping the impedance closer to the safe range of 4 Ω. If your favorite extension cab is 8 Ω, an 8 Ω onboard speaker will result in a total impedance that is very comfortable for your amplifier.

Note that connecting a total impedance greater than 8 Ω can also stress your amplifier for different reasons. If you very rarely or never use the external speaker output, you should install a 4 Ω speaker for your model 112, 120, or 145 Wurlitzer.
